Two families embarked on a journey to Kodaikanal, each in their own vehicle—one from Changacherry and the other (my family) from Aluva. Checking Google Maps, the shortest route from Aluva led via Palakkad, Pollachi, and Palani Ghats, while my friend's route from Changancherry went through Kuttikanam, Kumily, and Theni. Since our destinations were the same but our routes varied, we decided to align our paths as much as possible. Thus, I opted for the longer route, with a plan to meet up at Kuttikanam for breakfast. We hit the road at 5:00 AM, guided by Google Maps, navigating through winding roads, ascending and descending hills via Vagamon, and finally reaching Kuttikanam. Despite feeling a bit weary and in need of a restroom break along the way, we couldn't find any facilities until we reached our breakfast spot, ‘Teyla’, almost simultaneously. After a quick freshening up, we enjoyed a standard breakfast in a cozy, sunlit ambiance. While my choice of ‘Kallappam’ felt a bit sticky, those who opted for batura or dosa had a more satisfying experience. Continuing our journey towards Kodaikanal, we traversed another winding road to Kumily and Lower Camp, where the highway stretched flawlessly straight to Bathalagundu. Along the way, we made a pit stop at the base of the hills for tender coconut and restroom use, albeit at a cost of 10 rupees per person for the Indian-style squatting commodes. Here, we couldn't help but notice the overpricing by vendors. We fancied buying fresh fruits and vegetables grown in these mountains, but we could not find the market, only standalone shops selling almost stale fruits and vegetables at an exorbitant price. The ascent to Kodaikanal spanned about 52 kilometers from this point, with reasonably wide roads except for some perilous curves. The scenery was breathtaking, and after a two-hour drive, Google announced our arrival at our destination, ‘Holiday Home Resort’. However, it didn't quite match the pictures we'd seen, prompting us to call the resort once more for directions. Another 5 kilometers later, we finally reached our destination—a sprawling campus with small cottages evenly spread out. Since it was a weekday, check-in was swift. The rooms, though aged, were adequately modernized, with connecting doors between them. However, the bathrooms lacked showers or separate wet/dry areas, and the towels appeared worn. Despite this, the beds were comfortable, ensuring restful nights throughout our three-night stay. Breakfast and lunch were included in our package and proved to be both complimentary and tasty, with a limited spread. Opting not to dine elsewhere due to the lack of value-for-money options, we made the most of our resort's amenities. For activities, we enjoyed a short boat ride on the lake and visited Bryant Park, amidst crowded conditions. Our attempt to visit Guna Caves was thwarted by narrow roads and heavy traffic, prompting us to turn back midway. Traffic jams proved to be the most exhausting aspect of our journey, dissuading us from visiting viewpoints and instead opting to relax within the resort's premises. However, our morning trek through forested areas and a viewpoint proved exhilarating, with sightings of bison and a friendly Pitbull adding to the adventure. On our return journey, we chose shorter routes—through Palani, Udumalpet, Pollachi, and Palakkad. The stretch from Kodaikanal to Palani, though treacherous, offered breathtaking scenery along the mountainside. The journey through small towns on the plains proved challenging in terms of finding decent breakfast spots. However, the ride from Palakkad, with its superb 3-plus-3 lane highway, was smooth and swift, marred only by congestion in Angamally. We capped off our journey with a sumptuous lunch at the newly opened ‘Karthiyani Seafood Restaurant’ between Nedumbassery and Aluva—a delightful finale to our adventure. The weather, ranging from 11 to 24 degrees Celsius, provided a welcome relief from the scorching plains of Kerala. With memories of our trip still fresh, Kodaikanal and the ‘Holiday Home Resort’ beckon us for another visit!

Nestled among Kodaikanal hills, in a slight dip, Holiday Home resort is a splendid place to relax, with clouds frequently gliding through this resort. We spent a memorable week at this resort. The area is lush with greenery, with a clean stream that flows through it. Several traditional cottages and rooms are available with modern amenities inside. Just being in the resort, inside the rooms itself is a great way to relax! For those who prefer outdoors, a stroll within the resort brings up lots of interesting places to explore, with even a rope bridge that crosses the stream. Peacocks roam around freely and can be sighted sometimes. Indoor games and outdoor games are available. Food is top notch, so no need to worry about going out to hunt for the right place to eat. They have a garden and nursery inside itself (must visit for hobby gardeners). A camp fire is made every night, with night sounds all around, while will definitely remain in memory for a long time. There are couple of chocolate factory cum shops right opposite the resort. For those who prefer to walk instead of going around in a vehicle, several sightseeing places are accessible by walk. Romantic getaways, family time, big extended family get-togethers, retreat for a small group: all are possible at this place. The resort manager Mr Arul Prakash was constantly on his toes ensuring every single guest was taken care. The overall hospitality and politeness of the staff was exceptional! We made a last minute plan to travel to Kodai and though the resort was heavily booked, Mr Arul went out of his way to find the right room and check-in time suitable for our needs. I highly recommend that those travelling to Kodai spend at least a week at this resort (off-season and weekdays, if possible, as this resort is booked fully most of the time).
